A week of good surprises. Like getting replacement headphones from a long-forgotten request, an upgraded BB, a triumphant Reds-whooping Jays win, the ‘you have a package’ sticker on your sad lil’condo mailbox, sticking out like a proud valentine..leading you to a too-generous gift from a sweet-sweet friend, that stat holiday prompting a roadtrip home, random email hollas for more (& more!) summer jaunts…& then - tomorrow. The Black Angels.
Called it, stamped it, no erasies. Time to get back to my redneck roots - & what better occasion than an awkwardly situated mid-week nation-wide holiday? Getting a lil’ edgy & frazzled - need some of this & this & this & this. Virtual PS just doesn’t cut it anymore.
Treading water on the blogging tip. Will *maybe* make some sad attempt to back blog the great NXNE shows from Friday night (Standout surprise act - Apple Bros. from NYC - Gin Blossoms reincarnate & - of course - Martin’s new band - twangy Proof of Ghosts - oh-so-good) & Saturday’s Six Shooter day party & the always stellar Delta gig.
Too short, but very sweet. Tattoo Rock Parlour is a great small venue for shows. Hopefully they’ll start booking more live acts in there, besides the live karaoke night…HINT: The new songs are whip smart and catchy as hell. Can’t wait to exhaust the new record and memorize all of the wicked riffs and turns of phrase. Long live Sloan & so lucky to enjoy’em with my 1st Sloan concert date from the Kee to Bala days… Special thanks (again) to Saint Frank for the passes. Lovely times with old & new friends from the Euclid house, old & new work & nxne days. Nothing like a brilliant band to bring together a badass mashup group of peeps.
Exceptional summer kick-off-music-filled week continues….& bleeds into early next week, too.
A little sleep deprived and feeling the effects of not having an early night in since…Monday (?)…but couldn’t resist heading out again tonight. Thanks to Connie, I’ve adopted an orphaned ticked for R.E.M. at the Amphitheatre. Equally excited to see the legendary Athens-college-rock-pioneer headliners, who I missed at SXSW, as the two solid opening acts - Modest Mouse & The National.
The Ottawa trip was too definitely too short, but was a jam-packed interesting foray into learning about the future federal goings-on (geeked out bigtime hypothesizing the Hill journos search strings, possible fallout from discordant reports about the same meetings, etc.), visiting the Archives to search old-school Hansard & talking politics with friends at D’Arcy’s.
Thursday’s Teddy Thompson show was a much-needed infusion of twangy-tinged rock to comfort my weary body and mind after a crushing 3-point bball loss (ahh boo: ). He played a solid set that, of course, leaned heavily on the new record’s songs - unfortunately that record hasn’t been released in Canada yet - so the crowd lit up whenever he’d dip into older tunes. But I quite like the new record - this clip is Jonathan’s Book, in the pantheon of songs about books/the writing process (title championship: “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds vs. “Every Day I Write The Book” by Elvis Costello), it holds it own:
Friday’s Martha Wainwright show was just…well…sigh:
& last night’s Thee Silver Mt Zion Band was - intense - Lee’s Palace’s heat was UNBEARABLE. Can we have organize an outdoor benefit concert for an air-conditioning fund?
Time to catch up on reading, groceries, life, etc. before an early trek to the waterfront for what will no doubt be a beautiful show.

All –
I apologize in advance if this email finds you overworked & unimpressed with a deluge of useless information in your respective inboxes. Please hit delete if you don’t like having a good time, have bad taste in music and are a generally miserable person.
OK – now that all the cool people are still reading – I have some amazing news – Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed is coming to the Horseshoe on July 9th.
end of an era! replaced the camera. (would take a picture of the new one…but that would just be too frustrating) enjoying its company until the inevitable fall, crunch, conk out, etc.
another massive relay charity run/bike thingie has foiled my paper delivery - which worked out earlier & allowed an impromptu expanded brunch in posh rosedale…but now…experiencing withdrawal symptoms…all the more time to post Mp3s to peer pressure you into joining us at these Junetabulous shows, riiight?
