Mp3 - She’s Leaving Home - Billy Bragg (Reaching to the Converted, 2006)

and i’m tryin’ to make some girl, who tells me baby better come back later next week, ’cause you see i’m on losing streak

keep threatening to post the massive cover song playlist. but i’m too lazy. (and this guy does it oh-so-much-better.) a couple versions have been floated, but i’m always tweaking, never satisfied. HEY AWESOME SEGUEWAY:

Mp3 - Cat Power - Satisfaction (Live in Dallas, 09.16.06)

this is my favourite from Jukebox, even better live…
Mp3 - Cat Power - Aretha, Sing One For Me (Live Black Session at France Inter FM 23.01.08)

had to track down the original to really appreciate her interpretation…
Mp3 - George Jackson - Aretha, Sing One For Me (original version, Hi Records, 1972)

& speaking of Aretha…
Mp3 - Aretha Franklin - A Change Is Gonna Come (US Primaries Edition Remix, jokes, Sam Cooke Cover from ‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’, Atlantic, 1967
)

Good mellow stayin’ late workin’ tune…
Mp3 - Aretha Franklin - Tree Of Life Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky Outtake, from ‘Rare & Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul’, 2007)

way to go, way to flip off everyone. i steal your thunder then i try to bolt, but i could stand a little pity now and then.

i’ve wanted to go for awhile. like a really long time (not gonna throw around phrases containing double-digit year-units anymore). so i’m finally going this week. called it, stamped it, mailed it, no eraseies.

a city that, in my high school brain, was defined as parade-filled hijinx central thanks to ferris bueller’s day off, or as the epitome-of-mid-west-badass-early-melodic-indie-rock (though we called it ‘alternative’ back then, kids) a la veruca salt, liz phair, pumpkins (holla, amanda) & urge overkill, etc.

chi-town has now morphed into more layered (though not more sophisticated…) pop cultural references (hello high fidelity, kayne, kid sister, the sea & cake, pitchfork) & fittingly, it’s now lucky to be the new residence of the whitney hall’s pop-cult maven (books, records, films — these things matter. call me shallow but it’s the damn truth.), sam, while she’s hitting the law school books.

will be brutal gearing up to escape for thursday, especially after losing so much time to this hellish cold virus, but it’s well worth it. sia tix are in the mail for her show at park west, still leaves a coupla nights free for any experienced chicago traveler’s suggestions.

Do you ever love something MORE because you know that someone else would HATE it so very very much? An assault on the senses schadenfreude, if you will. Enjoy this Mp3 with my compliments, please. Play it loud & often.

Mp3 - You Can’t Always Get What You Want (SoulWax Remix) - The Rolling Stones

Still on the mend, but will be checking out Wm Delray’s 10pm show at the Riv tonight, & depending on my stamina, sticking around for Major Grange, too…

Everything’s a sign of my astrology, From where you are, to where I am now, Is its own galaxy

Oh interweb. You don’t mind that I’m sick’n'delirious on a lethal cocktail of anti-histamines, fizzy vitamin c thingers and extra strength whatsits. I made you this playlist to reminisce about the amazing den-of-slack-home-time we shared before Xmas. Good Times.

But the dawn is trouble, When I close my eyes, you never go away, I’ve tried everything, still you won’t change

Full of soup, tea & meds…I trudged off to the Nicole Atkins & The Sea gig at Lee’s, despite my body & mind’s unwillingness to escape the ‘do (hey, what’s another 24 hrs on top of 48?!).

Honestly, I’m wiped, might not *completely* remember the show tomorrow…but I’m glad I went. Atkins’ achy far-reaching vocals, melodramatic-but-compelling arrangements, poppy-sophisticated-catchy melodies, make for a livelier less-earnest spectacle than the usual singer-songwriterly tradition. It’s like a Sarah Slean, Jill Barber, Martha Wainwright medley sewn together with swish orchestral backgrounds by Patrick Wolf or Pierre Lapointe. Here’s what I’m trying to describe:

Mp3 - Nicole Atkins - Together We’re Both Alone (from Neptune City LP ‘07)

Very few pics’re here (camera issues, again, brutal…& there are 2 other equally poor or worse-shot videos), right above all the HHK snaps that went down before I embarrassingly turned into a sick-ass pumpkin at midnight…speaking of turning in…

g’night,
meegs

You laughed out loud, about someone who couldn’t get their shit together; I laughed along, ha ha, I almost wish you knew me better

i’m breakin’ my back, but it’s all good; ’cause i know i’ll get it back, ya i know your hands will clap

To commemorate the insane amount of snowfall, instead of ordering a crapload of Marimekko crap online (again…), & instead of making another I HATE WINTER playlist (’Cold Girl Fever’, ‘Cold Hands, Warm Heart’, etc, etc.), I’m posting free online shareable goodies. Here’s the live, acoustic-ish, Scandinavian All Stars Edition of Lykke Li’s ‘I’m Good I’m Gone’:

yet another quirky, frosty, pop music-makin’ sprite to enjoy post-disappointing-Volta
Lykke Li - Mp3 - ‘I’m Good I’m Gone’

Completely unrelated (or are they), can’t stop listening to these songs - good solid winter soundtrack additions:
The National - Mp3 - Cherry Tree (live)
Josh Rouse - Mp3 - Nothing Gives Me Pleasure (From Under the Cold Blue Stars)
Peace
Meegs

p.s. - New REM vid - Supernatural Superserious (I’ll say ‘hi’ to M.Stipe for ya when we’re chillin’ in ATX…) & new New Pornos vid - Myriad Harbours
