My poor little thing; You’ve been shuffled about, Like a pawned wedding ring; It must seem strange

I could post an entry about how I saw Cuff the Duke on the weekend, but that would be disingenuous since I didn’t actually spy the lads with my own two eyes. I did indeed attend the event at the Horseshoe, but unfortunately only got an eyeful of ‘schwa-ville backpackers and one particularly obnoxious douche in a windbreaker mugging to his friends proudly about the amazing lofty perch he overtook despite the fact that he was tall enough to stand and not obstruct the view of about 40 people throughout the show. But I digress. The Torontoist had an apt review that summed things up quite nicely – meh-riffic. Not an exceptional show for regular Cuff fans and an odd un-symmetrical, poorly planned set list. Disappointing.

Even sadder is that Facebook is eating away what precious little free time I have left. After walking home from French class last night (WTF? I know, but it was so mild & crisp last night, I couldn’t resist the hike – despite the high heeled boots…the re-invigorated iPod goes a long way…Thanks to the brain-downtime spent half-heartedly watching the Oscars, I’ve got 3 new-to-me Pretenders albums, Kid Koala’s latest, Destroyer’s Rubies, Stones Throw Compilations…& many, many more I can’t remember…stocked & ready to go for gym & transit & zoning out) I returned home to find myself hunkered down in front of a computer for another couple hours trolling around for former H.S. classmates, co-workers & the like.

Why this fascination with connecting to old chums & e-chatting with current buds? Well, according to New York Magazine, it’s my i-g-g-g-g-generation….but I don’t know if I buy into that theory (loved the April article on the Grup phenomenon, didn’t hit quite so close to home…)…BoingBoing even touched on the collective G-Spots & led me to a bunch of Wikis on the subject of this not-quite-GenX-but-never-were-called-‘tweens’-posse.

As much as I loved reading through all the different definitions of the Silent Generation, the Boomerang Generation, the Gen-Z, Culture Wars Generation, etc, etc….in the end I give it about as much weight as star signs. Don’t you think that your tastes, values and attitudes are shaped more by your family, friends & hometown than what year you were born in? Even having older siblings probably skews’ your worldview – knowing about ‘cool’ music & movies sooner than the rest….or – from a York-U-perspective – wouldn’t having disposable income significantly increase your generational ‘buy-in’ potential? Aren’t there some cultural touchstones that reach across generations & link like-minded people??

Anywhoo, I’d like to see how the Facebook phenomenon takes off. I was getting overwhelmed w/ the MySpace clusterfritter, but still appreciate the access to videos (Sketchersons post their show’s vignettes online: here ) and streaming audio.

Sigh. Post Ahoy on your social media opinions & preferences….or write on my ‘wall’.

….shout out out out tickets are still available…what are you waiting for???
….CMW Showcase w/ We are Wolves, Besnard Lakes, Baby Eagle & more are almost sold out, though….you should really get on that.

Check out this Times Online poll here….& answer this question:

Who will be this year’s most successful new band?

The Twang
The View
The Pigeon Detectives
The Enemy

Wild. I have mucho homeworkinera to do before heading South in less than a month. Yowsers.

Just blows my mind how much amazing music is out there & not making it to our laptops & iPods in Canuckistan. Brutal. The 1st Q Mag arrived in the mail yesterday & I was very very happy to see its contents, if not its cover (Mr. Flowers - no thank you).

Anywhoo, just thought I should share these feelings of music-geek-inadequacy….

Prolly bailing on Apples in Stereo tonight - I am completely wiped after an epic board meeting last night & intense workadge (earnestly types the recent Facebook addict…)

Oh no, I’ve stumbled, was I going too fast?l Some get angry, some of them laugh; They told me I wouldn’t, but I found an answer…

What a wild & flurried week it’s been. Apogies for not posting at all about the amazing Monday night w/ Midlake @ Lee’s - what a gorgeous concert. Beautiful sound, fitting background films, receptive audience - mellow vibe - Looking back on the Fleetwood Mac comment from posts past - it was a pretty sloppy’n'lazy compairson - Midlake are way more than a 70s throwback posse of scruffy Denton dudes. There were times at the gig when I longed for them to diverge into a Do-Make-Say-Think-ish swirly jam or spacier The Acorn fugue - still have trouble describing this band….So while I struggle w/ words, check out Frank’s Chromewaves feature for a fulsome account of the evening. Also - I was completely blown away by opener St. Vincent & can’t wait to check her out @ SXSW to finally see a full set.

Speaking of SXSW, (*since when am I NOT speaking of SXSW in the past couple’a'months…) the showcase schedule is finally up here.

This week’s weather induced a dreary set of the blahs…mid-week stuff after Monday was rough to get to & hibernating reigned supreme in decision-making….tho despite the lack of energy - or maybe because of all that stored-up energy - I still managed to party hop around 3 different events last night - not too shabby, tho I would’ve definitely liked to have included Crush Luther’s CD Release bash at the Horseshoe among the stops….Wintertime cabs just aren’t cheap enough to trudge backtracking to Queen/Spadina - especially w/ the nightmareish Clubland vibe that surrounds Queen West+West after dark on a weekend….insert bridge & tunnel joke/sniping here.

Here’s hoping that this week will bring more mid-week revelry & less severe weather…Going out & braving the cold this afternoon to snatch up a pile of Cuff the Duke tickets, which I hope are still in abundance…Please do join us & celebrate the triumphiant return of the Aussified couple, Robyn & Justin @ the Horseshoe…

& who’s going to Apples in Stereo on Tuesday? Dunno if I can stay awake much longer after my weekly French class, je suis tres desole, mais - if there’s an outing in the works, then why not? Still haven’t had a chance to see Rock Plaza Central & that’d be a good enough reason to go….

Enough stalling, need to get out & finish/start some errands…sigh

You’ve never learned to read or write, There’s no books upon your shelf; And your pleasure know no limits, Your voice is like a meadow lark’s

Ah the inter-web. Unsolicited penis-enlargement-offers & the ubiquitous mass survey sample. What better way to spend your Saturday a.m. than ranting on your weekly disappointment w/ the nation’s newspaper. At least TorStar didn’t contact me, it would’ve been a bit harsher after the horrid barrage of minimum wage blather for the past 2 weeks:

“The Friday 7 section is a disaster. I am absolutely loathe to bring it along on my morning commute - Either kill the TV listings or re-launch the magazine - this is a terrible, awkward compromise. I adore some of the Style/Fashion/Review columnists - MacLaren, Doyle et. al - but I have no idea why Von Hahn & Eckler still have gainful assignments/employment. It’s terribly annoying to see a column called ‘blogger’ when it is not at all like a blog. I hope that the launch of the new lifestyle section in the spring brings some structure/sense to the mishmash of Toronto/Style/Review/Focus sections on the weekend. The Globe - for all of its claims to be the nation’s newspaper - is getting its lunch eaten by better designed, hipper, smarter and savvier columnists, layouts, etc of the Post. It pains me to say, but I have seriously been considering a switch to a Post subscription - I love their columnists, layout, better daily sports section (for my partner…), fashion, etc. I think that it’s time to step back & review what the Globe hopes to accomplish - if you want to be the boomer health newsletter for the 21st century - then certainly forge ahead w/ the status quo. 20-somethings are not a hopeless lot for subscriptions - both on-line & in-print - so please don’t give up on us entirely. If you hire some more intelligent and insightful young writers (& the terrible Herouxville/Quebec coverage - overtly patronizing and completely unconnected to what’s really going on in Quebec - please let Gagnon retire with a shred of matronly dignity left & hire someone, anyone with some sense of the REAL QUE) - then we will eventually wise up & subscribe. Until that day comes - keep watching the numbers decline. I’d strongly suggest that you look to the NYTimes & how they built a reputable brand, amazing on-line archive/news source & mimic it as best you can. “

Grouchier than usual? I really need to start drinking coffee again. This Resolution garbage is killing me - at least I’m not TA’ing during this dry spell & the poor undergraduates of Cartoon University aren’t suffering - if I’m this hard on a newspaper, I can’t imagine how I’d brutalize HIS CDN 101 kids…..

p.s. Bebop Cowboys on the Danforth tonight…..Midlake Monday….please do come to either/both.

Should’ve taken Anthro @ Kansas State U…..

I’m sure that you’ve already stumbled upon this link….but I couldn’t resist embedding it herein. Enjoy it all its hokey glory.

Midlake is looking 80% a go for Monday.

Let me know if you’re down for some Fleetwood Mac-ish stylings to get over the Monday night blahs at Lee’s. Good times ahead.

They wear their leaves like Warholian wigs…………

I am thisclose to having a brain aneurysm in anticipation for SXSW, which is almost 1 month away - bought my ticket - rifling through the mental clothing inventory hoping to pack lightly to return w/ as much swag as humanly/legally/Air Canada-policy-adhering possible…So many rumours, leaks, announcements, educated guesses based on tour dates & the fact that SXSW-admin has yet to release an official list is KILLING ME.

Anywhoo, maybe my short tempered fidgety nature is due to the ridiculously small amount of sleep I’ve been running on. Last night’s Grizzly Bear show was so good - I had every intention of leaving early & being sensible, blah, blah, blah - but I was compelled to stay & gawk & gape at these ballsy, innovative lads. How the hell do you describe what GB creates? Mellow-prog makes it sound like slowed-down Rush. But this music couldn’t be more anti-Geddy (sorry Alissa & Ron, the ATX Rush fan contingent)…I left feeling like I cheated the promoter by paying only $10 for the ticket. Insane. Even after openers, Dirty Projectors, I was blissed out and miles away mentally from work & lengthy language classes….wow.

Dirty Projectors are absolutely unlike anything I have ever heard before. This lead singer was unabashedly one of the best vocalists I have seen in years – unafraid, innovative, ballsy, using his full register and challenging, thoughtful, evocative, I could go on & on & on about this guy, Dave Longstreth . & he was accompanied by two beautiful indie babes, amber coffman & angel deradoorian, harmonizing with insanely tight and well-balanced, non-traditional vocal parts of their own…Wild. They have a date in Denton on the 14th of March - so all signs point to yes for a SXSW showcase. I am so there already, lined up & camera-wielding this time.

Music blogs have tided me over the drought of live music of lates. Finally back on the lucked-out scoring of sold-out show ticket track, though. I couldn’t believe what people were willing ot pay (& how far kids were willing to drive) to catch GB last night.

Lots of delayed & word-of-mouth buzz about the new Sloan & after downloading a couple of tracks off music blogs, I’m convinced that I can’t stop buying every single record this year….I can’t lie – they are one of my all-time fav bands (I even went to that tribute night at the Boat last year - blogged about it somewhere…took pics when I was a better photo-blogger, since lapsed…) & I have all their records – an embarrassingly autographed copy of Navy Blues, posters, VHS of the vids…live album….early TO undergrad nights spend trolling for Patrick….but I just haven’t gotten around to getting the new CD…that should change this w/e/next paycheque.
