Yes, Virgina, there is a kickass way to twist litigation into sweet comeuppance. Would love to see the climactic mail-bag-deliverin’ scene for this future TV movie…Check out the cohunes on this teen’s…um…legal team fighting charges of piracy. Boy bites dog - firing back & accusing the industry of violating antitrust laws, defrauding the court system and making extortionate threats. Love it.

Please don’t hint even in the least about last night’s House episode. I was (thankfully somewhat enjoying being) stuck in a French class that ran 45 mins. overtime. Chrisdecalicedetabarnacdesacrement.

Anywhoo, if you’re up for some Drake time on Thursday to catch D’Urbervilles, let me know!

Who needs thinking, When the drinks are on the house?; Evaporating, All the time I was in doubt

To continue the theme of the SXSW Japan Night obsession, check out this new article from Slate about top-secret iTunes re-jigs that can open a whole new world of amazing songs.

Overall, last night’s Apostle of Hustle’s first gig of their residency at the Rivoli was good-ish…Don’t get me wrong, openers Besnard Lakes were brilliant & well worth the price of admission - I love those guys more & more & more. But to be brutally honest, I was pretty disappointed w/ AoH. I’ve seen’em 4-5 times before & they seemed less dynamic this time round. It’s not entirely the band’s fault - the Riv’s sound was unbalanced & off-kilter & Andrew’s voice was mushed up & drowned out…Adding insult to injury, they played a (n admittedly) terrible cover of Sarah Harmer’s ‘Coffee Stain’ which dragged down the 1st set. Overall - I guess it’d merit a 7.2.

The streak of scoring coveted tickets for sold-out events officially ended last night, too. With an admirable hat-trick (Sketchersons , Apostle of Hustle & Friends in Bellwoods…), but now karma is biting me in the calendar & I can’t track down Camera Obscura or M. Ward tickets to save my social life….boo-urns.

Anywhoo, it might be for the best to check out some less cramped & hyped shows in the next week or so….If y’all have any suggestions, you know where to find me (@ Thunderbirds are Now!’s Lee’s show on Sunday)

Peace

So irregular, how it messed you up, when Mr. T became a wrestler; Can’t forget about Jordan’s retirement

Maybe the world music industry’s latest pathetic policy offering should be interpreted as encouraging news for an Association harriedly grasping at straws…or should strike fear into the hearts of online music samplers sympathetic to residents of less-lax regimes….

Despite the fact that numbers released this week demonstrate a huge upswing (DOUBLED in ‘06) in monetized online music sales….the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s yearly Report suggests some psycho Chairman Mao action to shut down P2P sites.
Taking a page from China’s crippling deal w/ Google, the wizards at IFPI are pumping the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ tune around the office & reciting crap-filled passages like this:

“…But then Google promised the Chinese government that censorship was possible. Then Google blacklisted BMW in the internet world for anti-social behaviour. It seems policing is acceptable for all sorts of things but not intellectual property!…With cooperation from ISPs, we could make huge strides in tackling content piracy globally. Disconnection of service for serious infringers should become the speeding fine or the parking ticket of ISP networks.”

Sorry for the rant, but this is INSANE - You know that ranting about copyright has jumped the shark when it makes it to Maclean’s - wow. What a bizarro week in media & music.

Should end this on a positive note, hmmm…Join us on Sunday night at the Diesel Playhouse for some ‘best of ‘06′ themed Sketchersons action & get the new Nas album - illegally or legally - I don’t judge.

Have a great weekend

He was the youngest of nine children, never spent a night away from home; And his mother held his photograph, opening the New York Times

Weekend update. Relatively chill & subdued – managed to see some bands on Friday night, though….& The Bellwoods gig was a blast – Brilliant solo turn by D’Urbervilles, who must’ve gone on stage on/around 9:30??? Felt good to donate some canned food, too! More gigs should implement this as a point-of-entry requirement. Kudos for OhBijou - for taking the organizational helm & for the Tranzac for beings its usual charming self.

Feeling pretty gross the past couple’a’days in an unrecognizable gooey tummy sort of way. TMI, I know. The only thing keeping me alive is monitoring the rough seas of the Pirate Bay - & all the necessary peripheral software that one has to scurry around downloading for Mac’s Quicktime to enjoy the site’s torrent wares.

Some recent rentals/downloaded films have/will include: Sopranos Season 6, Newish House episodes, The Breakup (surprisingly good thanks to the hilarious supporting cast), Little Miss Sunshine & Factory Girl. Finally bit the bullet & gave up on a 4 day wait/laptop tie-up for the NYT has a thoughtful & thorough piece on David Byrne, the godfather of indie rock & his new theatre projects & general amazing-ness…Today’s LA Times has a very different, yet equally fulfilling piece on Clive Owen & his J Records label….Time for that dude to re-write the 1975 autobio, huh?

Anywhoo, from what I can tell - buds are dropping like flies w/ flu-ish symptoms…hopefully I won’t be another casualty…This week is shaping up to be equally busy as last & I can’t afford to be sick - French assessment tests, b-ball games, trips to the ’sauga, & hopefully a Delta gig, oh my!

Peace

Cause we’ve got our recruits, And our green mohair suits; So please show your I.D. at the door; This old earthquake’s gonna leave me in the poor house

Lots of tributes & lamentations over today’s sad news about the passing of a member of The Flying Burrito Brothers. A highlight of last year’s trip to the Country capital of the world was The Burrito Bros. display at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame - the amazing clothing & album art….quasi-psychedelia-twang-ifacts to admire.
Hopefully this prompts some Pitchforkers to check out the brilliant output of the BB outfit.

There was a flood, a world of water; The Mason’s wife, swam for her daughter

I’m obsessed with this site - so I will try not to post something siphoned from it every single day - but I just had to say that I was very psyched to pick up this tidbit - the Japan Night Lineup:

Friday March 16th at Elysium
Pistol Valve
Oreska Band
The 50 Kaitens
HY
Go! Go! 7188
The Emeralds

Will have to track’em all down on MySpace this weekend…..

Amazingly fond memories of checking out great acts at 2005 SXSW - Betty Pooka! & the un-affiliated nostalgia-fest of Shonen Knife.

Peace

New Year - New Gigs

My resolution is to go back to seeing more live shows - like the good old days. Sorry for the lack of real post-age lately. It’s certainly not the winter blahs - maybe the amazing weather is to blame. I have no patience to spend more time than necessary @ the computer/online….

‘Cause when the dead moon, Rises again; We’ve no time to start a protocol, To have us in

Why doesn’t this ‘BLITZ’ include Toronto??? Blasphemy. Or too soon to tell. They better be @ SXSW. Genius Jerks.
