There’s enough to blog-blather on about this Father’s Day morn. Last night was an amazing mix of Queen St. diversity. Photos here.
First at the Caddy, Rob, Justin & I enjoyed the fine food (tho eating & cheering on displays of pasties was a bit difficult…) & even finer ladies at the Skin Tight Outta Sight Rebel Burlesque show. This is their 3rd annual cabaret-style show at the Cadillac Lounge & it was bigger, better & smoother than in years past. I wish these lovely ladies all the success in the world because they work very, very hard & deserve it! All of the ladies work in different day-jobs & juggle choreographing, costume-making & practising (not to mention performing)…most interesting is Sauci’s social work with homeless women (& also the troupe’s bookings & biz affairs - what a sassy lady!) & CoCo’s cottage industry designing, sewing & selling her own line of tassels for, well, you know…NOT upholstery. CoCo’s routine was so fantastic, I just couldn’t resist fawning all over her & commending her for the pitch-perfect balance of 80’s movie parody, comic timing, facial expressings & stripping.
CoCo has more talent in her pinkie finger than your sorry ass. Deal with it.
Then off to Squirly’s to celebrate Rachel’s b-day - tho we were quite late to the party after staying late at the Caddy to catch up with Mel & watch the Oilers game on the patio…At Squirly’s we encountered some of the most brutally stern (borderline mean) staff, this reception mysteriously melted away with a generous tip/bribe…Note to self: Stop going to Squirly’s. It was great to catch up with the birthday girl - exchanging sassy barbs & observations about the sausage-fest that is Queen’s Park…Rob & Mel’s Hill-Time fueled the fire & pretty soon we were all wound up & poor Justin hung back & waited it out…
Thankfully, Brain Borchdt of Holy Fuck came by & distracted the verbal bra-burnage & we caught up on the band’s amazing success since their showcase gig with Dependent Record’s support @ SXSW. They have come so far in two years - regularly touring the UK & often popping down to NYC & playing to bigger audiences. They’re on the bill at a couple of Metric shows this summer - but dunno if many Toronto headlining gigs are on the horizon. Sounds like they’re doing a great job of spreading the word overseas! Check’em out on their MySpace page or HomePage if you haven’t already….
Anywhoo, the biggest & best reason for blogging this a.m. is that it’s Dad’s Day! My Dad is as cool as they get - not in that lame leather-jacket-wearing ‘I want to be your friend’ Dad-style, but just good ol’fashioned thoughtful, FUNNY, knowledgeable & resourceful style. We celebrated last Sunday with modest gifting & another Cadillac visit. He introduced me to Rod Stewart
(much to the chagrin of the Beau), Neil Diamond, a big crate of jazz LPs, broadcast regs, air-popped popcorn (as a food group), the Super Dave Osbourne Show, musical theatre (ditto on Beau comment) and volunteering. His clutch-cargo advice is invariably similar & usually all I need to hear: You’ll figure it out - give it time, don’t worry. Happy F-Day, Dad! Looking forward to spending some time in Parry Sound when I get back - unemployed & jet-lagged - I know that you’ll still endure me when I’m at my lamest….
Peace,
Meegs
