You can concentrate on the ones you love
You can concentrate, hey, now they’ve gone…”
Wow. I am absolutely delirious but I’ll attempt to post thru the haze of exhuastion, sickness & WTF-happenstance….
As I settled in around 10:30 last night, after spending the better part of yesterday feeling sorry for masself & pouting around the apt…I received a terrifying call from my Dad’s BF from Detroit…his mom, Mrs. D, who’s one of my BF - an 83-year-old dynamo that continues to inspire me to read broadly & often, walk everywhere & stick-to-my-guns…was just not sounding kosher on the phone & he was rightfully freaking out….I had just talked to her on the phone when she cancelled our plans for today after complaining about a cold - “I don’t want to go to a movie & cough & sniffle & bother people” - The world needs more people like this & less SUV-stroller Moms lugging their ADD-hellion-brood into movie theatres!!!
I hauled ass into a cab lookin’ scrubberiffic with the patient-as-Job beau & found her in a cold sweat shaking & dizzy. It took the better part of an hour to coerce her, while chatting on & off with her son on the phone, feeding her glasses of water & juice (note to self - time to read up on diabetes…) to head to St. Mike’s ‘just for the sake of Jimmy (her son).’
Thankfully, the inter-generational guilt-spin worked & we popped into another cab to the ER, between triage nurses, admin stuff, waiting rooms, other-ish nurses, on-call Drs, & supervisory final-say Drs…we were finally dismissed with the A-OK, some OJ, a low-blood-sugar diagnosis paired with a brutal cold that’d swept to TO a coupla times over…
The whole episode left me reminiscing about spending QT with Toshi & Robert in an ATX ER room after a run-in with Mex Margaritas & nervous-restauranteur-liability procedures…
It’s going to sound absolutely morose…but without bleh-inducing background music, flashing televisions in every room corner, yuppie pricks (real ones, not the band…) & pomp & circumstance…with the right peeps - a night chatting in an ER beats the hell out of a bullshit cocktail hour or uncomfortable silence inducing friend-of-a-friend dinner party…
I couldn’t NOT spend the night with Mrs. D in her condo - listening attentively to her shuffle from the kitchen & bathroom back to her bed - cursing the impractical analog-wannabe digital chiming decorator-planted mantle clock & sympathizing-musing with her son about the blessings & curses of being an only kid.
One that note - I’m off to have some soup & 6 o’clock news - Remember to appreciate the WHOs of shared company & stop caring about the WHEREs….
