I walked around for hours, two ten pence pieces in my hand

The anniversary went off without a hitch…We slept in ridiculously late - read the weekend papers…walked around our fav ‘hoods…priced sofas…split for respective meetings (Mine for NXNE, his on campus) & responsibilities & re-connected for a sinus clearing Pho dinner…

Of course, there were more mushy & private moments than that…but I’ll leave it at that then…

Annie’s shower was so much fun in its pretention-free set up & simplicity. Her family explains what a sweetie she turned out to be! That gal certainly lucked out with her Waterloo classmates, too, all amazing ladies that I look forward to dancin’ up a storm to some Jon Bon melodies @ My Apt in a couple’o weeks!

This Wednesday sees Robyn heading to sunny AUS to reconnect with her beau…sadly her last days in the GTA won’t be super sunny, but the yin & yang of life has a funny (not ha-ha, but you know, weird) way of working itself out…I’ll miss ya, bra & I expect a TON of those digital photos that the kids like to take these days….

More NXNE stuff to do tomorrow, plus work & reconnecting with my fav OP sales reps - looking forward to revisiting that workplace to fill in in late June (hope Toshi’s okay with that…)

Oh I wish I wish I wish I was born a man, so I could learn how to stand up for myself, like those guys with guitars I’ve been watching in bars…

Yesterday with the D’s was a blast, as always. I am becoming more & more grateful that my messed up work schedule allows me these pregnant pauses to hook up with all the interesting GTA friends that I’ve had a tough time staying connected with.

Mrs. D & I enjoyed Red Hot Ballroom a great deal - the similiarities to Spellbound go beyond the subject matter. It seemed like from the very beginning musical strains that there were many parallels & links to be made, the NYC atmosphere, wide variety of kids (less in-depth about their backgrounds, but playing up the Bad News Bears angle of heir upbringing..)

Today I’m in Newmarket living a vida local with a post-shower tour from Annie on her high school scene.

Last night’s nei-boor-ish interaction was the last goddamn straw…no more passive-aggressive WASPy subtley from moi…After unwillingly overhearing hours upon hours of this tortured relationship between two morons, I tossed masself over in bed to wail - in what I hoped to be a tougie Brooklynitie accent, but probably emerged as a Sylverster the Cat wail - Shaddup Goddammit! - So it worked well enough - I had a whole ‘zing’ mentally prepared & was nerdily rehearsing it over & over as the hours progressed…but alas, when I’m irked & ired, that’s the best that I can come up with…need to work on that…more ‘zing’ & less Looney Tunes

In odd record release news, it seems like the Lomax estate is taking its cues from the prolific post-humous Tupac empire. An exhaustive (how else did good ol’ Alan do’em? - This one runs the gamut from Boy Scout choirs to Vodou ceremonies. Over 1,500 performances in total) 15 CD set of his recordings from Haiti in 1936 are hitting shelves of better record stores in 2008.

Tho he gets a bad rap in circles that pepper their language with different combinations of post- ‘colonialism’, ‘Westernised,’ & ‘hegemonic’…you can’t look back on the history of creating the history the word’s indigenous music & not respect the man for his precise attention to detail. Not only was Lomax a stickler for documenting the whos, whats, whens, wheres, hows & whys of the recordings, but his contribution of photography & diagrams help us visualize the act of creating music that much better than with his capable prose alone. Kudos to Rounder for picking up the project & having enough faith in the non-Rutamaya-crowd to support this in 2008. Hopefully more than the Anthropology prof fanclub will recognize the merits of series - which will probably be evenly spilt between French, English & dialectical langues (Latin counts as a local dialect, right? Catholic liturgies were part of his 5 month tour, too….)

Enough nerdy music talk,

I am digressing slightly so I’ll continue, didn’t want to bowl over all geezer & rude, not rude like good but just rude like uncooth…

Theory & Yorkdale Proof - Toronto is the Los Angeles of Canada.

Ugh. I had a loverly visit with Mrs. D (http://torontosun.canoe.ca/News/Columnists/Warmington_Joe/2005/05/12/1035836.html) yesterday & our adventues continue into today - I’m trying to recount as much as possible in my short online time before I meet her for some Cumberland Theatre QT to enjoy a hot doc & dins in the St. Lawrence Market area. After power hiking to the Eaton’s Centre to pick up this Saturday’s shower gift, snag wrapping paper, streetcar it back, wrap that biatch, pound back a quick smoothie lunch, pack up again for campus internet access…I’m crunched fo’shizzle. Upon hearing that I was stag-ing it for the week, she graciously invited me over for dinner with her & her son. Before dins, we strolled leisurely through Yorkville & witnessed the pomp & circumstance that can be Toronto the good.

I’ve had this discussion with the beau before - the LA as TO theory is the only reason why overpriced, meh restos along the College St. strip stay in business - the patio effect. People pay to be seen & eat on display. The only beyond medicore dish @ Diplomatico is the antipasto platter - & how the hell can you screw that up?

Too rich Lohan wannabes penetrate my workplace daily - they sure as hell wouldn’t be pulling that crap in Winnipeg…Witnessed a mini Mean Girls redux moment at work the other night…two 8-ish not even tweens were on a goddamned shopping spree for halter tops, just beyond gross & inapropos - their handler (praying it’s not their Moms..) abided & indulged - the Spears domino effect will dumb down the North American human race, I’m convinced…

TO isn’t all lame-o wannabes - the NXNE crew that I’m team leader-ing with are primo. Met a hella cool chicka that just moved from the Hammer to downtown TO & wants a record store, boutique & badass venue tour - how cool is that? We’re working thisclose & supervising the registration volunteers together. She even has an academic for a beau - bizarro. The meeting was painless & I’m looking forward to meeting the entire crew on Sunday’s fully loaded meeting @ the Rivoli.

Last night’s gig was a huge surprise - went out for the SS Cardiacs & received a shiny & sparkling package of pop perfection in the form of the Bicycles. My bud Matt had told me about’em years ago during our UofT heydays…& I completely forgot about’em. They still haven’t put out a record, but MAN they are the best poppy indie band I’ve seen since I’ve been back. They called up Andy to sing doot doots on the ‘Montreal’ track for the finale which was boss. The Republic of Safety put on a good show, I’ve been enjoying the EP for about a month now & got pretty much exaclty what I had expected - protest punky jumpy pogo-able tunes with a conscience. As for the headliners, Martin & I ducked out about halfway through their set a tad disappointed to say the least. I have heard awesome things about Jessie Stein, but I just wasn’t feeling the SSC that night for some odd reason…

Happenstanced into Phoebe on the way out but punked out on a 360 drink & wanted to book it home & get some rest - as luck has it tossed & turned thanks to freaks of neighbours - slept in hardcore…hence the errand crunch & we’ve come full circle…turn, turn, turn…

Well, today finds me fed up with the $tarbuck$s racket & seeking secure & speedy connectivity @ UofT.

Decisions, decisions…when to reply, turn the other cheek, rebut with a firey tirade, calm masself, rise above, reflect, etc, etc…Applies on enough levels.

From the mundane - Attending SS Cardiacs gig tonight (http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2005/03/1610.cfm)
with a bit of trepidition. Certainly not because of the company. I’m looking forward to hooking up with my ex-Euclid Ave. roomie, Martin (of the Pickups fame: http://www.thepickups.ca) to catch a Sneaky Disease gig (& maybe some mystery nachos, too…)..But this band has been severed & my otha UO bud, Andy (of the Spitfires & Mayflowers fame: http://www.spitfiresmayflowers.com/)..
I guess if I go to enough shows I’m supporting enough local talent that it all evens out, right? ugh.

Larger decisions are getting…not quite tougher, but more tiring to defend…& I’ll leave it at that then, witha big ol’ A/C box dumped on the dead horse of a decision making process - I’m in the GTA for the next year, maxin’, relaxin’, foldin’ & supporting the notorious M.O.M. while she’s here for tests & zapping.

Off to meet my fab friend, Mrs. D - probably to stroll thru boy town & gab about the world at large. Big tings, big tings…

Pretty low-key weekend for a long holiday weekend…I was working Saturday & Sunday, expected to get called in on Friday, but to no avail…Spent that sunny day helping the beau with a conference paper & writing referee thank you letters…
In anticipation of a solo dwelling arrangement this week, cocooned with the beau & two fav classic comedies - L.A. Story (Inspired by this month’s Believer interview: http://www.believermag.com/issues/200505/interview_martin.php) & Brazil..other than that, no decent shows of note work trekking out for…
Just spent the before-work moments enjoying the sunnyish weather & walking around new & old neighbourhoods - Parkdale, Kensington, Campus, Queen West, Chinatown, Lil’ Italy & Portugal….
There are some interesting future events on the horizon thru work - a couple of coworker CD Release parties, art shows, etc, but nothing supersoon….
Ran into a highschoolmate that I did improv with & tried to fire off some updates to trade. Refreshingly, she was honest & quickly admitted that tho she kept in touch with a handful of PSHS buds, she was almost as clueless as I was about the majority of our castmates…We didn’t even do the phony phone number exchange offer or future plan schitck.
Finally CTV news is inquiring about the ridiculous fees charged by Ticketmaster. The reason I trekked around from Rotate This, Soundscapes & the Horseshoe for Rilo Kiley tix was that the on-line Ticketmaster ’service’ is a doggone joke - $3.50 extra per person + you either have to haul yo ass to a ticket printout outlet or wait in line again at the venue…argh…Rotate This lists the upcoming Spoon gig as sold out - hopefully I can snag some at the Horseshoe again, or may end up at Hidden Cameras…
Not much else to report, sadly…Will write more soon,
Meegs

Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis said herself after taking the stage - “The Brunettes, Nada Surf, Rilo Kiley…wow…this is some epic shit.” & she was right. I was pleasantly surprised by New Zealand’s multi-instrumentalist, mixed gender-ed & power popperiffic The Brunettes…so much so that I scored their newest LP along with the requisite (ahem) Rilo K T-shirt…
Clarinet, xylophone, trumpet perfectly (& not gimmic-ily) complimented well-crafted pop tunes that had enough umph to stand alone as solid 3 pc. outfit’s repertoires…but were sweetened up & reworked for an original twist.
Couldn’t help but get a lil’ (or a lot) misty eyed at the double whammy Nada Surf +Rilo Kiley gig last night. NS’s “Let Go” was my February/March soundtrack - the last of my days in ATX, marking a lot of reflection & walking & scary future decisions…Their harmonies are just heaven. Both RK & NS wear their hearts on their sleeves lyrically, unashamedly singing about heartbreak & loneliness & alienation…but intelligently enough to make bitingly true observations without seeming faux-ironic or jaded. In RK’s case, the narrative songs are the strongest, when Lewis takes on the burned lover character in one verse, faithful wife another….
Tho RK played a lot of new material in show, to be brutally honest, they tuckered the audience right out (not a great audience to begin with - see rant on all-ages show & insert here…& there was a disproportionate amount of Chatty McTalkalots that should just be at home mixing hipster fruitinis & listening to ‘ambient’ shit if all that interests these degenerates is the sound of their own voice…).
To be fair, RK didn’t take the stage til quarter til midnight - which means that about halfway thru a good chunk of tweenyboppers had to leave to meet Daddy at the Finch subway station or whereverthefuck. But even the devout indie mega fan was seen shuffling feet & scanning the room about two-thirds of the way through. After the super tight & high energy set of NS, it’s tough to endure too many twangy ballads (that, for the new material, starts to melt together after awhile)…especially since they reworked the ‘Portions for Foxes’ & ‘It’s a Hit’ endings so well, playing down the twang & turning up a jangly, jamming rock feel.
Anywhoo, that’s enough from the music nerdery, I’m expecting to get called into work tonight, pretty sure that I work tomorrow too (missing Waub’s epic shit party on the island…).

Just pondering some of my last post - I worry that I was way too negative in my assessment of the new QP crew peeps…My description was probably more related to my insecurities about not having a politico background (or raging interest…)that brewed into resentment for my lack of apropos attire. I guess that I’m just super defensive about protecting this bullshit abstract act of authenticity from “selling out.” Acting defiant about the socially necessary tasks of making smarmy small talk, bridging awkward conversations and eventually earning tenuous yet valuable connections doesn’t achieve much of anything. One speaking point delivered by Carolyn Bennett almost two years ago at a conference (ugh, I’m sure she’s having a field day in the HoC budget vote today…I wish her all the patience in the world tolerating turncoat Blondie) that stayed with me was her emphasis on affecting change “at the table.” I have been thinking about that in the context of this position, and how it related to my bigger picture ambitions…Speaking of attire & selling out, UO was a great shift last night, despite the “letting go” of a nice-enough gal that I was hired with…ahh boo. Apparently, it’s practically law to fire somebody face-to-face & not good enough to do it over the phone….like breaking up, right? Anyway, I am hoping to score some more hours with the wheat from sheaf separation of lates. I guess she took the whole be aloof ethos of the corp too literally. Apologies for my very tardy e-mail reply phase…been into a reading & not writing back mode for no good reason. Check out this great pic by Toshi from the Stubb’s gig RK played a week-ish back…now it’s my turn to catch’em again - at the Opera House, one of my fav TO venues, no less…

…and they did just that. A hella brilliant, ambient, swirling, twirling, po-mo & yet at the same time melodically familiar set of British Sea Power did me good after a nerve-wracking ‘reception’ on Queen’s Park last night.

First the good stuff - Lee’s wasn’t packed as usual - a nice bit of elbow space - probably not great news for the Brits, tho….Missed the opening act, which was disappointing considering that I saw a smattering of Arts&Crafts illuminati milling ’round before, after & during the gig. Ahh boo. I cannot begin to adequately describe BSP’s sound - they are a less peppy The Coral, but with the same devotion & straight-man sharpness in keeping with their nautical theme of travellin’ tales. As for the greenery, they brought their game of foilage to accessorize the stage, which is nothing compared to the monkey business, Eddie Vedder-chimpanzee routine that the lead guitarist pulled off during the finale…Noticed a rightuflly freaked-out Lee’s stage hand WTF-ing while the lighting gobos waivered over the audience on the dance floor level. Ugh - Could’ve been a Great White Moment…

Second the meh stuff - I survived the reception swimingly, I hung tight with alumni interns that I knew thru the beau & UofT, and mostly the two current interns that I met on the interview day - we are completely & totally on the same wavelength, as is another current intern that interviewed me that day, too….who btw, was at the gig with his gf, along with other Queen’s Park peeps - there’s hope! Anywhoo, I felt a lil’ out of place among the newbie class…All the girls were “DKNY all up in my eye” - 3 pc suits, heels, etc…except, of course, yours truly. Ugh. So in my T5S oxford shirt & UO trousers, I was ready to blend in cammo-style into the panelled walls & mow down mini pitas, hummus & fruit platter treats…A couple’a MPPs offices did the hard sell with early recruiting techniques, & I was brutally honest about my pretty focussed area of interest & apolitical standpoint on most policy areas…
So hopefully I wasn’t a total laid-back party pooper at the function…guess I should brush up the wardrobe…I don’t even own a suit…& until the last minute arrives when I’m milling thru Winners petites section, I think I’ll keep plunking most summer revenues into more decent concerts like BSP (Rilo Kiley + Nada Surf tomorrow!) rather than hit up Holts & try to squeeze into something that I’m not….

Wow. So I’ve been noticably absent from the on-line community for awhile…A ton of e-mails just got ’starred’ to be replied to tomorrow (I promise!)…

I had to bonsaii my fav gal in Ottawa for her b-day party. With a spectacular organizing team of devious political wranglers, Mel & Allison & Brenda - there was just no chance for R-dawg to ever figure out that we were getting her to gussy up in tacky garb & sweat to the oldies among family & friends. It was a brillant party & I am so happy to know that my O-Town house is still rockin’ & a great site for a massive bash. The sound system was a marvel & Robbie D did the DJ&MC schtick perfectly, tons of nostalgia-fest candy & food, booze-a-plenty & a wicked mix of old & new buds.

Tho this excursion required a 5hr. trek back & fro on the Greyhound bus….it was bearable with the beau, good tunes, Twizzlers, Japanese studies, newspapers, wicked (& familar) scenery & of-course…napping. I actually fogot how calming riding that bus can be once you dull your senses to the sweaty, stinky, gropy, pushy louts that ride alongside you.

Sadly the season is plugging along & it will soon be swealtery summa in T-dot. Very hawt & sticky & construction-y, etc. How do I know this? My fav U of T haunt is shut…Diabolo’s is done for the campus year…so sad - no more overstuffed couches & free newspapers & carob rice krispie squares & fair trade coffee….or pretending to be a school rat…which is probably healthy…non?

For now, counting the days (only 2) until I get my iBook & can be pimping out the city’s WiFi without shame. Until that Wednesday comes…I’m stuck in Robart’s killing time until another UO closing shift rolls around. Wednesday also brings my ‘rents to town for a visit, a Gentlemen Reg gig that I hope to get early parole for & a night with my fav octogenarian, Jean….good times are guaranteed.

As for media references, obviously I”m not watching this Allen classic right now (being in brutally oppressive, but somewhat better than when I was Frosh Robart’s library…), but I had the pleasure of indulging in it after my ego-crushing gym program this a.m….between laundry runs & real runs & errands & e-mails, my mornings are amazingly flexible…& there is a certain intangilble special bliss that I get from watching these old movies again, alone. Like a good book, I always get something different from a WA movie everytime I go back & watch it & project whatever stage of life I”m experiencing at the time…My mom attributes my early adolescent obsession with this recently weirder filmmaker with my current neuroses…but I think that’s just a parental cop-out on her part…you decide….

Watch out you might get what you’re after, Cool babies…

I’ve got Feist on the brain….my bud who scored me the UO gig, Andy, saw that I was in a shitteriffic mood on Friday & in an act of kindness & small but big retail victories, he spun me a double whammy of DFA1979 & Feist whilst working away my blues. It made me realize how central music is to keeping-altering-improving a mood. Tho now that Feist & DFA 1979 & new Stars LPs have been spinning to DEATH at the employment centre….I’M getting weary of their tunes & breaking my usual adherence to the avoiding too much of a good thing…which doesn’t apply to Super Nibs, coffee or trashy magazines.
Anywhoo - Alls well that ends well - Spent a nice night this weekend at a gallery opening as a part of the CONTACT photog festival….David Byrne’s installation is thru the artsy & trashy Queen W zone in the streetcar booths - check it out - http://www.davidbyrne.com/art/new_sins/index.php
Last night, was compelled to screen ‘Crash’ being the massive Cheadle fan that I am & wasn’t completely disappointed - here comes the but - I thought that some of the storyline connections were a bit too tenuous….& gimmicky & unnecessary…But overall a decent flick considering that I hate Brendan Fraser as much as Andy McDowall…
Enough blathering…time to head’er to work & end this Micheal Buble exposure therapy…ugh.
